Black Culture is Not a Fad

Boxer braids, Dashikis as It-items, Afros and Rachel Dolezal’s entire existence are just a few examples of how popular culture has tried to take ownership or “discover” things that African Americans have been doing for centuries. We all remember when Kim Kardashian tried to attribute her cornrows to Bo Derek and when Elle Canada described Dashikis as the newest thing in fashion. Let us not forget how Rachel Dolezal tried desperately to pass as African American, even sporting weaves and braids.

Since everyone wants the rhythm of Black culture, and not the blues, designer and entrepreneur Nareasha Willis has successfully put this disparity on blast. Describing her designs as a destination for style-conscious millennials, Willis delivers an in-your-face street style that calls out culture vultures. With t-shirts and sweatshirts that say things like, “Ghetto Until Proven Fashionable,” and doorknocker earrings with the word “ghetto” in the middle, she is literally creating statement pieces. Her refreshing fashions take ownership of what belonged to the culture in the first place.
