Getting Rid of Wardrobe Clutter

Something serious happened to me yesterday. I had to forego my workout to put my clothes away. It was really bad. As I type this, I can hear my mother’s voice in my ear, “Clean up your room and put your clothes away!” Over the course of two weeks, I had managed to pile up almost half the contents of my closet in the corner of my bedroom. By the time I finally put everything away, there were seven coats, three pairs of jeans, four pairs of pants, five sweaters, four dresses, two shirts, and four scarves. Every day instead of putting my clothes away in the closet, I just took them off and placed them in the pile. It almost came to the point where the pile was almost halfway up the wall. As I hung my items back in the closet, I realized that I still needed to do a wardrobe purge. I absolutely hate clutter, my bedroom closet is beginning to look like a war zone.

Since my baby boy is now two-years-old, I can no longer say, “I’ll wear this when I’m not pregnant.” If I haven’t worn it in the past 18-months, I need to get rid of it. I know Chicago seasons aren’t normal – it’s cold from October to June – so there is a little wiggle room for some outfits, but I really need to get rid of some stuff. During my last purge, I found pants from 2007. 2007! I miss those pink pants… Anyway, since I usually wear the same things over and over again, the purging has been surprisingly easy so far. It’s just the sentimental things I am holding on to – the jeans and tank top I wore on my first date with my husband, the first sweatshirts I ever purchased from Spelman, and a couple of t-shirts. Then there’s always the old, “What if I need to wear this someday?” Yeah…I probably won't. I came across this post today from Fashion Bomb Daily, and they offer some great tips on de-cluttering your closet. You can read the full article here. I definitely need to apply these tips to all three of my closets. (I am a work in progress). I’ve also found that it is always best to do a closet clean-up after each season, especially if you tend to purchase a lot of trendier pieces.
