Before the six-part documentary, we all knew what was happening. We all looked the other way. Until now. I can admit to being vividly aware of his marriage to an underage girl (while I was underage) and knowing that it wasn’t right. But I still sang along to his songs. I can admit to watching the infamous tape in a dorm room in 2002 and then Stepping in the Name of Love. Jamming to Ignition on the way to the club and purchasing a bootleg copy of Unfinished Business. What separates us is what we do now. Are we still defending his actions because of his talent? Or are we actively muting this monster and making efforts to prosecute him? Are we making better decisions as music executives, parents, friends, and family members to protect our children and prevent this from happening in all atmospheres?
Its 2019. Our voices are louder. People are listening. Say something. Do something. His actions have affected a generation of young girls and their families. It’s not okay anymore. Let’s continue to uplift our young people so they know they are worth so much more.
